Skilled Trade Competition Showcases Diverse Opportunities and Incoming Talent

Ontario secondary and post-secondary students are being invited to participate in the Skills Ontario Competition to show off their abilities in tech and skilled trades.

The two day competition, held May 7-9 at The Toronto Congress Centre is the cornerstone event of Skills Ontario—"a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the skilled trades and technologies as viable, first-choice career options to Ontario youth.” The competition showcases youth talent in such diverse fields as culinary arts, animation, welding , construction and more.

Prior to the event, qualifying competitions are held throughout Ontario on April 7, 20187 for the disciplines of Culinary Arts, Individual Carpentry, TV & Video Production, and Welding.

In the case of welding, for example, contestants are evaluated on their “abilities to safely work through all the tested welding processes, including layout, position, fit and tack welding. The interpretation and application of welding symbols will also be tested.”

At the competition in May, not only will students be competing in terms of their skills in their chosen discipline, but the competition also has a job interview component, where students are rated in terms of their interview ability.

The event also features a Career Exploration Showcase which allows visiting students to see many of the career options available in the skilled trades and technologies. There are over 70 exhibitors offering hands-on activities to educate, inspire and engage the students.

Mark your calendars to be able to check out the youth talent entering the skilled trade field! What an amazing opportunity for employers and students alike to get to know each other and learn more about all the amazing opportunities!
